What is St. John’s Wort? Can it really cure depression?  Our experts at USA HealthyMen have the answer.

ith all the antidepressants available today, it’s quite enough evidence that a simple pill could help people cope with depression. However, it’s also expected for some to look for other natural ways – or products that could help them deal with depression without having to take regulated drugs. One plant that has been considered by many naturopaths as a cure for depression is a small weed called St. John’s Wort.

St. John’s Wort got its name from its traditional flowering and harvesting on the 24th of June, which is also celebrated as the feast of Saint John the Baptist. Its botanical name is Hypericum perforatum, and it grows in temperate climates in Europe, Asia, and Africa. It has been used for centuries as a source of alternative medicine, as its flowers and aerial parts were used as tinctures to treat conditions of the nervous system and immune system. Since the 14th century, it was used as a treatment for anxiety, pain, neurosis, and by association – depression.

Extensive studies about St. John’s Wort revealed that it has the compounds needed to help people cope with depression. St. John’s Worth is found to have flavonoids and hypericin, which are natural antidepressants. These chemicals work by reacting with neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which are the key components that affect your mood. By acting on a person’s neurotransmitters, St. John’s Wort effectively helps alleviate the symptoms of depression.

In the reports published on the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health shows that St. John’s Wort can help people suffering from depression, particularly because of its effects on Serotonin.  Although St. John’s Wort has shown incredible positive effects on people suffering from depression, it is not recommended as a replacement for the treatment recommended by physicians, nor does it warrant the users to postpone seeing your doctor for treatments related to depression.

Depression is a serious condition, in which if inadequately treated may become severe and in some cases, may lead to suicide. St. John’s Wort may not be combined or stacked with other antidepressants, since it could lead to a life-threatening increase of Serotonin – the same neurotransmitter affected by antidepressants. St John’s Wort works in the same spectrum as several antidepressants, and it can only be considered as an alternative treatment if recommended by an actual physician.

St. John’s Wort is now being used in several products that are marketed as all-natural antidepressants or relaxants. It has definitely proven its worth in testing, but proper caution needs to be exercised if you are planning to take the product. Due to its effectiveness in activating neurotransmitters, St. John’s Wort is also found in several mental enhancement products such as Brain Gain – the best mental enhancement supplement in the market today.
