20 Date Ideas that Aren’t “Grabbing Dinner”


‘m sure you’ve been on a million “dinner dates“. It’s true that we’ve all gotta eat, but it can honestly get boring if all you do is watch each other chew with the odd anecdote thrown in. There’s a ton of other alternatives to the classic “dinner date” that she will love to take part in, some of which are completely free. Here are 20 date ideas that are anything but cliche.

  1. Walk a dog

If you have a friend who owns a dog, ask him or her if you can dogsit for the afternoon. Any girl would love the chance to play with a dog and it will literally cost you nothing.

  1. Play catch in the park

This is one of the easiest dates to pull off. Grab a tennis ball and a blanket or something to sit on after and maybe a bag of chips if you think you’ll be hungry later. You can also toss around a frisbee which would be a little more active and exciting.

  1. See an independent theatre show

There are tons of theatre companies out there that have incredibly cheap ticket prices. Check in your local newspaper or online resource to find some cool shows you think you would both like. It might be totally weird and experimental, but good or bad, you can bet it will be entertaining.

  1. Go to a meditation class

Meditation classes are often free which is a huge plus. They usually happen during the day although the odd one will happen in the evening. You are both gonna be so Zen afterward. Prepare to be totally present with one another.

There are board game cafes popping up everywhere, but if you want to keep the spending to a minimum, grab some games you already own and play them at a picnic table in the park. You can stick to classics like checkers or go to your local game shop and have them recommend some new and exciting games for two.

The stereotype is true, women love to shop. Make each other try on outfits you’ve picked out for each other. This could be a good way to see how your partner wishes you would dress. You don’t have to buy everything you try on, women spend entire afternoons “just looking” while not spending a single dime.

  1. Go to a comedy club

Seeing some comedy is a great change of pace and will reveal some sides of your date you have probably never seen before. Improv shows are usually cheaper than seeing a sketch show or stand up and can be equally as funny.

  1. Have a picnic

Again with the park. It’s just such a chilled out place, plus you’re in nature and you can catch some rays as well. Bring a blanket, some juice and some sandwiches. Bam, you’ve got a perfect picnic for two.

  1. Make dinner at your house

Find some cool recipes on the internet, gather some ingredients and get cooking! The good part about getting busy in the kitchen is that the bedroom is never far away. After creating your masterpiece, you can sit back, relax and stuff yourselves silly.

  1. Go to an escape room

Escape rooms are all the rage nowadays. It can be a whirlwind experience and you may see a side of your partner you never knew was there. There are lots of different themes you can choose from and working as a team will bring you closer together.

  1. Go see some live music

If you live in a city, there will always be some band playing at some bar. Look through your listings and find a band that you think you will both like. Even if it doesn’t end up being your cup of tea, you had some drinks together and you can hate on the band together.

  1. Ride bikes

Remember when you and your friends would ride bikes all afternoon? Remember how much fun that was? Why not break out the wheels out for an afternoon and explore. You don’t necessarily need to know where you’re going, besides you might discover a part of your city you’ve never seen before.

  1. Shoot some hoops

Go to the elementary school near you and shoot some hoops after hours. Play a little “one on one” and see where it gets you. All you need is a basketball, sneakers and some healthy competition.

  1. Take a walk in the woods

Hiking out in nature just feels so good. Breathing in that fresh air and getting in a little bit of exercise is not only good for your health, it’s good for your relationship.

Go to a club or a bar with a DJ and break out those dancing shoes. What could be more fun than dancing and drinks? Plus, this is the kind of date where inappropriate touching is encouraged, right?

Tai Chi? Yoga? Dance? Cooking? Improv? Why not take a class together and find out if you’ve found your new favorite hobby? There’s nothing wrong with trying something new and even if you fail, you still had an awesome date.

Everyone is at least a little bit good at tennis. There’s bound to be a court nearby at a park or school. Grab some rackets and a ball and you’re good to go.

  1. Go Bowling

Bowling is fun as hell. It’s the perfect date. It works really well with just two people. Even though it’s a competition, you both feel like you’ve won in the end because it’s so damn fun!

  1. Go to the pool

If you have an outdoor community pool, why not catch some rays while hanging out in your bathing suits. If you go during a weekday, it won’t be as over run with kids. You can also just put your feet in the water if swimming isn’t your thing.

  1. Go for a run

Kill two birds with one stone. Spend time together and get your sweat on. Choose a nice path out in nature or dodge the city streets. Having a running partner is also great motivation and will keep you from taking unnecessary breaks.
